The Washington, DC market covers three jurisdictions: the District itself, Montgomery County in suburban Maryland, and the Northern Virginia counties and independent cities of Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, Alexandria and Falls Church. The federal government sets the pace. As of July 2022 it employed one in four people working in the District, and the lobbying firms, law firms, trade associations and think tanks that work around it fill K Street and the Golden Triangle. After government, the District's largest employers include universities and hospitals such as Georgetown University, Children's National and MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Tourism is the second-largest industry, with 24.6 million visitors in 2019, served by the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the Smithsonian's museums and The Wharf on the Potomac. Across the river, Tysons holds the largest concentration of office space in Northern Virginia, the Dulles Technology Corridor runs west through Reston and Herndon to the data centers of Ashburn, and Arlington is home to the Pentagon and Amazon's second headquarters. Montgomery County adds 18 federal agency headquarters, including NIH and the FDA, and more than 350 life sciences companies. Salons and assisted living are licensed by different agencies in the District, Maryland and Virginia, so the rules described on an industry page can change between Georgetown, Bethesda and McLean. Weather is the other constant: summers are hot and humid, with heat indices near 100°F, and the District averages about 13.7 inches of snow a season, which brings slush and road brine to entrances each winter.
