What Boerne brings
John James and Gustav Theissen surveyed and platted the townsite on Cibolo Creek in 1852, three years after German Free Thinker colonists from Bettina had settled the creek's north side as Tusculum, and the town incorporated in 1909 — which is why limestone-era housing along historic Main Street sits minutes from subdivisions cut into raw Hill Country rock. Boerne went from 17,850 residents in 2020 to an estimated 24,047 in 2025, about a third more in five years, so fresh caliche, December-through-February cedar pollen and hard limestone water load old and new houses alike.
As the seat of Kendall County, Boerne runs on county government at the 1870 courthouse — the second-oldest in Texas — plus the Hill Country Mile, the 1.1-mile walking route along River Road Park and historic Main Street that carries its shops, restaurants and visitor trade, the Boerne Independent School District campuses including Boerne High School and Samuel V. Champion High School, the private Geneva School of Boerne, and the 24-hour Methodist ER Boerne on Menger Springs.
