What Renton brings
Founded in 1875 when Erasmus M. Smithers discovered coal there and still a coal-and-timber town at its 1901 incorporation, Renton more than tripled from 4,488 residents in 1940 to 16,039 in 1950 as Boeing's wartime factory rose, then grew more than sixfold again to 106,785 by 2020 — so its 25.27 square miles, running from the south flank of Cougar Mountain and the East Renton Plateau down to the Cedar River's mouth on Lake Washington, hold houses of nearly every era, the older ones built without air conditioning. Nine damp months work that stock the same way each year: mildew returning to bath grout and north-facing sills, moss and algae on shaded roofs, siding and walkways under second-growth conifers, river-valley grit tracked across entry floors, and cedar and alder pollen filming glass that low winter light shows every streak on.
Boeing's Renton factory, which assembles 737 MAX airliners and P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft adjacent to Renton Municipal Airport, employed 12,919 people in 2023, ahead of Valley Medical Center at 4,304, the Renton School District at 2,659, Kaiser Permanente at 2,550, Providence Washington Regional Services at 2,050 and PACCAR at 1,827, whose Kenworth assembly plant opened here in 1993. Further down the same 2023 list sit Wizards of the Coast at 1,033, Blue Origin at 826 and the Seattle Seahawks at 674, with The Landing's 68-acre retail and residential district and the Southport lakefront hotel and office complex rounding out the commercial core.
