What Old Northeast brings
Over thirty subdivisions platted between 1910 and 1917 — Snell & Hamlett's North Shore and Bayview additions, Erastus A. Barnard's, North Bay Heights, Jackson's and Colonial Heights among them — grew together into the roughly 425-acre North Shore Historic District, added to the National Register in February 2003 and described in its nomination as the largest and most intact residential neighborhood in St. Petersburg (4th Street N to Tampa Bay, 5th Avenue N to 30th Avenue N). Its 2,975 contributing buildings are mostly one- and two-story Frame Vernacular and Bungalow houses built between about 1910 and 1950, and with virtually every block close to the shores of Tampa Bay or Coffee Pot Bayou, salt film settles on porch glass and rails while the lush landscaping sheds litter onto the original brick streets, granite curbs and hexagonal block sidewalks.
Overwhelmingly residential, with the retail and restaurant activity pushed to the edges — the 4th Street North corridor along the western boundary and a handful of corner storefronts inside the district — plus The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection on 5th Avenue NE at the southern line and downtown's Beach Drive and Central Avenue districts a few blocks further south.
