Emptying the kitchen bin is only one step. Inspect the lid, rim, pedal and removable liner for ordinary residue, then follow the bin’s material and mechanism instructions. Clean its floor footprint separately, dry the container before fitting a new bag, and keep hands clear of lid mechanisms during the work.

Separate removable parts from fixed mechanisms
Open the bin according to its instructions and remove only parts designed to come out for cleaning. A sensor lid or battery compartment is not a washable bucket. Keep powered components outside any rinsing step and leave disassembly to the owner or appropriate instructions. If the lid is broken or will not stay safely positioned, pause the task.
Check the contact points that a bag does not cover
Look beneath the rim, around the lid’s contact edge and on the pedal. Use a product appropriate to the material and follow any rinse directions. Keep the bin cloth separate from clean food-preparation cloths. CDC distinguishes cleaning visible dirt from any additional disinfecting step; an ordinary wipe does not establish that a contaminated item has been disinfected.
Dry, reassemble and identify recurring leaks
Clean the floor beneath the bin using the floor’s own method. Let the liner, rim and floor dry before reassembly. Fit the bag without trapping it in the hinge or obstructing the lid. If residue repeatedly appears outside the liner, look for an ill-fitting bag or damaged removable container rather than covering the smell with fragrance. Do not handle unknown sharp or hazardous contents as ordinary rubbish.

Published scope and the limits of this guide
The published JAS scope says: “Surface-level upkeep for homes in generally good condition. Kitchen, baths, dust, beds, vacuum, and mop.” — Read the source service page
This addresses normal household-bin surfaces. It excludes hazardous contents, waste hauling, infestation treatment and repair of powered lids or pedals.

Frequently asked questions
Can I rinse a sensor lid?
Only use the cleaning method its manufacturer allows; do not assume electrical lids tolerate rinsing.
Is a new bag enough?
It does not clean the lid, rim, pedal or floor underneath. Inspect those separately.
Should an odor be covered with spray?
Investigate ordinary residue and leaks first. Persistent unexplained odor needs a cause assessment.
