Give reusable grocery bags a cleaning routine

Include reusable grocery bags in the unpacking routine instead of folding them away immediately. Check the interior, handles and removable base, then follow the bag’s care instructions. USDA recommends washing reusable shopping bags after each use with hot water and soap. Keep cleaned bags open until dry before storing them.

Empty the hidden parts as well as the main compartment

Remove receipts and overlooked packages before the bag goes to its cleaning area. Check corners and any removable stiff base for spills. Keep food unpacking separate from bag washing so a used bag is not returned to the freshly cleaned preparation surface. Ask the household to decide what to do with forgotten food; appearance alone is not a food-safety assessment.

Follow the care method for that bag

A cloth tote, insulated carrier and rigid shopping bin may need different methods. USDA’s washing advice is not permission to put every construction in a washing machine. Read the care label, including instructions for liners and removable panels. If the bag cannot be adequately cleaned after a spill, have its owner evaluate replacement rather than masking the residue with a scented spray.

Keep the clean storage location separate

Allow all washable parts to dry before reassembling and folding. Check seams and the underside of the base, not only the opening. Store cleaned bags in a designated spot away from the pile awaiting washing. If bags are also used for shoes, cleaning supplies or hobby materials, agree on separate uses so their next grocery trip does not depend on somebody remembering an unrecorded change.
