Black mold on grout and caulk: clean it or replace it

Two different jobs hide in this question. Dark staining on grout usually responds to a baking-soda paste dampened with hydrogen peroxide, fifteen minutes of dwell, and a soft brush. A caulk bead that has gone black inside the silicone does not respond to anything — the growth is under the surface, and that bead gets cut out and replaced, not cleaned.

Knowing which of the two you are looking at saves you the weekend.

First, figure out which problem you have

Wipe the darkest spot with a soapy cloth. If the black lightens or smears, you are dealing with surface film — cleanable. If the color sits unchanged behind a clear layer of silicone, it is growing inside the bead, past what any surface product reaches. Grout is porous cement, so it can hold staining deeper than a wipe but still within reach of a paste and dwell time; cured silicone is a sealed plastic, so anything visible on the inside of it got there through a failure, and cleaning the outside cannot reach it.

Cleaning grout lines

Work the same way we treat traffic-lane grout on floors, adapted to a wet room:

1. Rinse the wall and joints with warm water to lift loose film and soap scum — a paste working over soap scum wastes its dwell on the wrong layer.
2. Press a baking-soda-and-water paste into the stained joints, dampen it with hydrogen peroxide, and leave it 10–15 minutes.
3. One light pass with a soft nylon brush or old toothbrush along each joint. Rinse thoroughly, then dry the wall with a towel — the drying is part of the method, not a nicety.

What about vinegar versus bleach — the question everyone actually types? We will not rank them, because what any product does to growth is a claim only its label can make; if you use a registered product, use it exactly as the label says. What we can tell you without hedging is the safety line: never combine bleach with vinegar or an ammonia cleaner, in the bottle or on the same unrinsed surface — one product at a time, rinse between. Caulk: the honest part

Surface spotting on silicone wipes off with soapy water and a soft cloth, and the earlier you catch it the more often that is all it takes. But once the bead is black inside, every cleaning “win” is temporary by definition — you are brightening the window, not removing what is behind it. The fix is mechanical: cut out the old bead, dry the channel completely, and run new silicone rated for wet areas. It is an hour or two of careful work for a handy homeowner or a small job for a handyman; re-caulking is not part of a cleaning visit, ours included.

If you re-caulk without changing anything else, the new bead inherits the old bead’s conditions. Which brings us to the actual cause.

Why this keeps happening in a Miami bathroom

Growth needs sustained damp, and a Miami shower supplies it generously: a wet season that runs roughly May into October, outdoor air often damper than the air inside (so airing the bathroom out through a window can make it wetter, not drier), and an A/C that is doing the real drying work for the whole home.
