Never clean these with vinegar: natural stone — marble, travertine, limestone, terrazzo, and sealed granite — finished hardwood, electronics screens, the rubber gaskets on appliance doors, or cement grout as a routine. The reason is the same across the whole list: vinegar is acetic acid, and on these materials acid doesn’t clean — it dissolves, dulls, or dries, and that damage never wipes off.
One mechanism explains the whole list
White vinegar is labeled at around 5% acetic acid, with a pH near 2–3. That’s exactly what makes it useful: hard-water crust is calcium carbonate, an alkaline mineral, and acid dissolves it on contact. The problem is that marble, travertine, and limestone are calcium carbonate. The same reaction that clears a shower door eats the polished surface of a bathroom vanity. That’s called etching — it isn’t dirt sitting on the stone, it’s stone that is no longer there. It shows up as dull rings and cloudy patches that catch the light, and it doesn’t clean off — it gets re-polished, which is a stone restorer’s job, not a product’s.
The never-list, surface by surface
- Natural stone — counters, vanities, and floors. Marble and travertine etch on contact; a vinegar-damp cloth forgotten for a minute leaves a permanent dull ghost. Granite holds out longer, but the acid wears through the sealer — and unsealed granite drinks oil, wine, and juice straight into the pore. - Finished hardwood. Vinegar rarely touches the wood itself — what it dulls is the polyurethane wear layer protecting it, pass after pass, until the floor has neither shine nor a defense against water. Wood-flooring manufacturers’ care guides rule it out in writing; if your floor names a specific cleaner, that label wins.
- Electronics screens. TVs, laptops, and phones carry anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings that acid strips in blotches no one can reapply. The makers ask for a dry microfiber, or one barely dampened with water — and nothing else.
- Rubber gaskets and seals. The refrigerator door gasket, the front-load washer boot, the dishwasher door seal: acid dries them out and cracks them, and that rubber is the only thing keeping the cold in and the water in. A cracked seal is a repair bill, not a cleaning problem.
- Cement grout, as a routine. An occasional diluted pass is survivable; undiluted vinegar used repeatedly slowly eats the joint itself — the stain goes, and the grout goes with it. Where vinegar still earns its place
None of this makes vinegar the villain — it’s a glass-and-mineral tool. The Miami angle: granite condos, terrazzo classics
Miami puts both traps in one market. In the condo towers, a granite kitchen and a marble-topped vanity are close to the default finish — and because the water here leaves mineral film on faucets and glass, the temptation to solve the whole bathroom with the same vinegar bottle is real. The crust on the faucet, yes; the counter the faucet stands on, never. And in the 1950s-and-60s housing stock — South Miami, North Miami Beach, and their neighbors — the original floor is often terrazzo: ground stone in a cement matrix, which is both things acid attacks fused into one material. FAQ
I’ve used vinegar on my granite for years and it looks fine — did I get lucky?
Partly. Granite’s minerals resist acid better than marble’s, so what vinegar attacks first is the sealer — and sealer wear is invisible until stains start sticking. Run the water test: put a few drops on the counter, and if the stone darkens or the drops stop beading within a few minutes, the sealer is thin and it’s time to reseal.
Is “cleaning vinegar” from the store different from regular white vinegar?
Only in strength. White vinegar is typically labeled around 5% acetic acid; cleaning vinegar around 6%. Same chemistry, slightly more of it — which makes it a little better on glass and mineral crust, and a little worse for everything on this list. It is not a different product category.
Does diluting vinegar make it safe on stone or hardwood?
No — dilution slows the damage, it doesn’t change the chemistry. A weaker acid etches marble more slowly and dulls a floor finish over more months, but the direction is the same.
