Orrin Thompson's 1960s subdivisions — platted on either side of County Road 42, named for Apple Valley, California, home of the firm that selected the site, and planted with an apple tree at each home in some of the new developments — carried the city from 585 residents in 1960 to 8,502 by 1970, and single-family detached land still covers 5,267 of 6,678 residential acres, about 79 percent.
