What Dupont Circle & Logan Circle brings
L'Enfant's 1791 plan set both circles, the Army Corps of Engineers began building the western one — then called Pacific Circle — in 1871, and Alexander "Boss" Shepherd's 1870s public works turned the surrounding ground fashionable; what filled in is mostly pre-1900 Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque rowhouses, with 135 late-19th-century residences in the eight blocks around Logan Circle alone and larger 1895-to-1910 dwellings on the diagonal avenues now cut into apartments and condominiums — original plaster and hardwood taking spring pollen off the street trees, humid-summer mildew at basement and garden level, and salt tracked in from brick sidewalks all winter.
