How to clean a fabric couch at home

Start under the cushions: the cleaning code on the tag — W, S, WS, or X — tells you what the fabric tolerates before you touch a single product. Then vacuum the whole couch slowly, spot-treat with the least liquid the code allows, and let everything dry completely. In Miami the rule is simple: blot, never soak.

The order matters because the expensive mistake comes first. A water-based product on a fabric that calls for solvent leaves rings that never come out; solvent on a fabric that only tolerates a vacuum can take the color with it. The tag exists precisely for this — and almost nobody reads it before they start rubbing.

The tag decides the method

Lift a seat cushion and look for the tag sewn to the deck of the couch or to the cushion itself. It carries the cleaning code the furniture industry prints on most upholstery sold in the United States — the one instruction that actually comes from whoever made your couch. Four possible letters:

• W — water-based cleaning. A water-based upholstery product on a barely damp white cloth is allowed. This is the most forgiving code — and still not an invitation to soak anything.
• S — solvent only. Water is the mistake here: on an S fabric it can leave rings and set the very stain you were chasing. A water-free dry-cleaning solvent, used exactly as its label directs, with the room ventilated.
• WS (or SW) — either one. Water-based or solvent, your choice. The least-liquid rule still applies — and one method per stain, never both at once.
• X — vacuum and brush only. No liquid of any kind, water or solvent. Whatever a vacuum and a soft brush cannot lift from an X fabric is a job for an upholstery professional, not for a stronger product.

No tag, or worn blank? Treat the couch as unknown: vacuum freely, but test any product on a hidden patch — the back corner near the floor — and judge nothing until that test spot has dried completely. Rings show up as fabric dries, not while it’s wet.

Vacuum first — slower than feels reasonable

Cushions off. Run the upholstery tool over every face of every cushion, then the crevice tool along the seams and piping where crumbs and grit collect, then the deck the cushions sit on, the arms, the back — and the floor underneath, since the couch is open anyway. Slow, overlapping passes lift more than fast ones. A vacuum removes what it lifts: for the dry half of what a couch holds, that’s the honest claim, and it’s most of the job.

Spot-treat with the least liquid that works

Whatever the code allows, the technique is the same: blot with a white, barely damp cloth, work from the edge of the stain toward the center so you don’t spread it, and stop while the fabric is damp — never wet. Rubbing grinds the stain deeper and roughs up the pile; blotting transfers it to the cloth, which is the entire point. And where a product may be used is its label’s call, not a blog’s.

The Miami step: drying is half the method

Everything above assumes the water leaves. In Miami it leaves slowly: for much of the year the outdoor air already carries more moisture than the fabric does, and cushion foam holds water long after the surface feels dry to your palm. A couch that stays damp inside is the direct route to that closed-house smell — mildew starts wherever moisture lingers. Hence the rule above: least liquid, always.

After treating a spot, dry it on purpose: A/C running, a fan aimed at the treated area, cushions stood on end so air reaches both faces. And skip the balcony in the wet season — an August afternoon outside can hand you back a cushion damper than it left. It’s the same drying discipline that governs a mattress in this climate, where drying is the step that deodorizes.
