The order matters more than the effort: each step protects the one before it, and the drying protects them all.
- Strip everything and start the wash — Sheets, duvet cover, mattress protector, pillow protectors. The care label on each piece is the ceiling and the only honest source for how hot it may be washed. The smell you are chasing lives mostly in this pile — fabric holds what a night leaves behind — so the wash is half the job before you touch the mattress at all.

The internet’s most repeated answer is to sprinkle baking soda, wait, and vacuum. We will not claim what baking soda does or does not do — a cleaning company is in no position to, and the box has a label of its own. What can be said is mechanical: everything you sprinkle onto a mattress you then have to vacuum back out of it, completely, and a fine powder asks a lot of a household vacuum.
