A deep clean is the difference between "this looks clean" and "this is clean." We can spot the difference because we're paid to. But here's the operational secret most cleaning customers don't know: a 10-minute pre-clean prep is the single highest-leverage thing you can do to make a 4-hour deep clean more thorough.
Why? Because deep cleaning isn't really about cleaning — it's about access. We need to reach the surfaces. If your kitchen counter has 18 items on it, we can either (a) move all 18 items to clean under each one and lose 25 minutes, or (b) ask you to clear it before we arrive and use those 25 minutes on the inside of your oven instead.
"The customers who get the best deep cleans aren't the ones who try harder — they're the ones who clear surfaces beforehand."
The 10-minute pre-clean checklist
1. Clear flat surfaces in the kitchen + bathrooms
The 30-second rule: if you'd grab it on the way out the door, leave it. If you wouldn't, box it. Counter clutter is the #1 thing that turns a 3-hour deep clean into a 4-hour one.
2. Tell us about the pets
Names, locations during the visit, allergies, things they're scared of, where they're not allowed. The cleaner gets this on their phone an hour before arrival. It changes nothing about the clean — except they won't accidentally let your indoor cat out the front door.
3. Strip the beds
If you want linens washed, pull them off. Leave them at the foot of the bed. We'll wash, dry, and remake the bed — but stripping is the slow part. (Ten minutes per bed times three beds = thirty minutes you bought back for the kitchen.)
4. Empty the dishwasher
We don't run yours — too many variables. But if it's empty, we can put dishes from the sink straight in. If it's full, we either wash by hand (slow) or stack on the counter (looks bad). Empty wins.
5. Empty trash + recycling
Yes, we replace liners. But if the bin is full when we arrive, we make a trip to the outside dumpster before we can start. Three bins × three trips = nine minutes you don't have to lose.
6. Cue up your music + your gate codes
Want us to play your Spotify playlist? Open it on the speaker before we arrive. Have a gate code? Add it to your booking notes (we don't text the cleaner — JAS sends them the code 1h before arrival, encrypted). Buzzer not working? Tell us where the spare key is.
7. Talk to the orchid
There's always one plant. The one that's not supposed to be watered. Or the one that needs to be watered. Or the one that came with the apartment in 2019 and somehow survives every owner. Tell us about that plant. It goes in your home's notes — permanently.
What not to do
Pre-cleaning before a pre-clean. Don't wipe counters, don't sweep floors, don't fold laundry. We're going to do those things, and there's no version of "I already wiped" that ends with us not wiping again. The deep clean is the wipe.
What you can skip without guilt: vacuuming, mopping, dusting, scrubbing, polishing. That's literally our job. If you've done it the day before because you had guests over, fine. Don't redo it for us.
Bonus: the smart-lock setup
If you have a smart lock (August, Schlage, Yale), set up a one-time access code that expires after the visit. Drop the code in your booking notes. You don't have to be home. You don't have to leave a key under the mat. Our team gets the code 1h before arrival, on their phone, encrypted — and because the code is one-time, it's dead after the visit. It's the setup we recommend for every recurring plan. It's the future.
This guide is part of the JAS operating playbook — written before launch, to be refined with every real clean. When our first team leads are on payroll, their names go on these posts.
