What Grapevine brings
Grapevine is the oldest settlement in Tarrant County — a town site laid out in 1844 with roughly 800 residents by 1890 — but its 22,236 housing units are mostly the product of one boom, as population jumped from 11,801 in 1980 to 29,202 in 1990 and 42,059 by 2000. Those 1980s and 1990s subdivisions sit on Eastern Cross Timbers ground between the reservoir the Army Corps of Engineers completed in 1952 and the airport, with 3.63 of the city's 35.78 square miles under water — about a tenth — so homes take lake wind and dust, oak and ragweed pollen, and hard-water mineral film year-round.
Corporate headquarters and tourism carry the city together: GameStop and, since 2017, Kubota Tractor Corporation are headquartered here, the Gaylord Texan Resort employs about 2,000 and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport — of which Grapevine holds a larger share than any other municipality — about 1,980, ahead of Grapevine-Colleyville ISD (about 1,700) and Paycom (about 900), while Great Wolf Lodge, the 1.78-million-square-foot Grapevine Mills outlet mall managed by Simon Property Group, and Main Street's antique shops, restaurants and Grapevine Vintage Railroad move the visitor volume.
