Old Town Alexandria, VA.

Laid out in 1749 and designated a National Historic Landmark District in November 1966, Old Town holds one of the country's best-preserved assemblages of late-18th and early-19th-century urban architecture — Federal, Colonial and Late Victorian town houses fronting cobblestone streets and red brick sidewalks along the Potomac. Those brick walks shed grit onto original wood floors and marble thresholds year-round, spring pollen settles on painted brick and transom glass, and winter salt off the waterfront blocks is what actually eats finishes indoors.

King Street's retail and restaurant spine, running from the Metro station down to the waterfront plaza, carries the commercial weight — Market Square fronts City Hall's King Street entrance and holds a farmers' market every Saturday morning, and the Torpedo Factory Art Center at 105 N. Union Street has housed working artist studios in the former U.S. Naval Torpedo Station since 1974 — backed by the adjacent Carlyle district, where the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's four-building Alexandria campus and the National Science Foundation's headquarters at 401 Dulany Street sit.
