What Sachse brings
William Sachse, an immigrant from Herford, Prussia, bought 640 acres and put up cotton mills here in 1845, but the town stayed rural through its 1956 incorporation and built almost everything recently — 8,978 housing units at the 2020 count and a climb from 20,329 residents in 2010 to 27,103 in 2020 across just 9.77 square miles, about 2,770 people per square mile. Newer slab-on-grade subdivisions over blackland prairie vertisol mean construction dust in the growth pockets, dark shrink-swell clay carried in from lawns, cedar-elm and live-oak pollen, and hard-water film on showers and glass.
Sachse is predominantly residential, with neighborhood-scale retail strung along State Highway 78 and the President George Bush Turnpike; its largest single worksites are schools, including Garland ISD's Sachse High School, open since 2002 with 157 faculty, while the region's big-box anchor — the 998,347-square-foot Firewheel Town Center — sits about a mile south, over the line in Garland.
