Do cleaning services require a deposit or upfront payment?

FROM THE OPERATING PLAYBOOK · ES / EN

Some cleaning companies do ask for a deposit or full payment upfront — most often on large one-time jobs like move-out or post-construction cleans. JAS does not: there is no payment at booking. Your payment method is verified to confirm the slot, and the invoice is issued only after the visit is completed.

Why some companies ask for money upfront

Across the industry, upfront payment shows up in three situations. The first is large one-time jobs — move-out cleans, post-renovation cleans, first-time deep cleans — where the company is committing a crew for most of a day and wants protection against a no-show. The second is first-time customers with no history. The third is small independent cleaners who simply cannot absorb an unpaid morning the way a larger operation can.

None of that is automatically a red flag. A modest deposit on a six-hour job, put in writing, with clear refund terms, is a normal way for a small business to protect a full day on its calendar. The problems start when the deposit is large, undocumented, or paid in a way that leaves no trail — more on that below.

How payment works at JAS

Our published terms say it plainly: there is no payment at booking. The flow is the one on our terms and booking pages — you request a quote, see the exact number, and then request a time. A booking is confirmed once we verify the payment method on file and confirm your slot; until then it is a request, and we tell you either way.

After each completed visit, we issue an invoice for the quoted amount plus any taxes or re-quoted additions you approved, and email you a secure hosted payment link. The paid invoice is your receipt. Nothing is charged before the team has actually done the work, which also means the quote has to be honest up front — we explain how that number is built in how cleaning companies calculate a quote.

One related clause matters here: if the scope on arrival is materially different from what you described — extra rooms, heavy build-up — we re-quote with you before doing extra work, never silently. An upfront-payment model makes that conversation awkward; an invoice-after model keeps it honest.

A deposit is not a cancellation fee

People often conflate the two. A deposit is money held before the work; a cancellation fee is a charge for a late change. At JAS you can cancel or reschedule free up to 24 hours before your appointment. Inside 24 hours, a $25 cancellation fee applies, and a lockout — the team arrives and cannot get in — may be treated as a late cancellation. If we have to reschedule for weather, safety, or staffing reasons, you never pay a fee for a change we initiated. That is the entire downside exposure of booking: no deposit at risk, no prepaid balance to chase back.

If a company does want a deposit, check three things

If a company resists all three, that tells you more than the deposit itself does.

The move-out case, where the question matters most

Deposit anxiety peaks around moving, and reasonably so: you are already fighting to get a security deposit back from a landlord, and the last thing you want is a second deposit tied up with a cleaner. In the homes we clean around Miami, move-out weeks are exactly when budgets are tightest and timing is least flexible — the lease ends on a fixed date whether or not the truck showed up on time.

Our move-out cleaning is priced from $409, runs 5–7 hours with a 2–3 person team, covers 38 checklist items, and produces a full photo archive PDF you can forward to your landlord in one tap — with nothing paid until the work is done. What that visit costs at each apartment and house size is broken down in our move-out cleaning cost guide.

FAQ

Do I pay before or after the cleaning?

After. The invoice is issued once the visit is completed, for the quoted amount plus any additions you approved, with a secure hosted payment link by email.

Why do you need my card if you don’t charge it at booking?

Verifying the payment method on file is how a request becomes a confirmed slot — it filters out no-show bookings without taking anyone’s money early.

Is a booking fee ever charged?

No booking fee exists. The only fee in our terms is the $25 late-cancellation fee inside 24 hours of the appointment.
