Should you tip for a deep clean or a move-out clean?

J
JAS Cleaning
FROM THE OPERATING PLAYBOOK · ES / EN

Tipping for a deep clean or a move-out clean is optional — exactly as optional as on any other JAS visit. There is no tip button in the booking flow and no gratuity line on the invoice: nothing is charged at booking, and after each completed visit we issue an invoice for the service delivered. What a longer visit changes is the logistics, not the rule.

This is the one-time-visit chapter of a question we already answered in general. The full argument — why we will not print a percentage, how a tip splits across a team, where cash goes in a Miami tower — lives in how much should I tip my house cleaner?. Here we cover only what changes when the visit is a deep clean or a move-out: the longest days on our published tables, sometimes worked in an empty property you never walk back into.

The rule does not change with the service

The Terms are the same document for every visit type, and what they bill is short: nothing is charged at booking; after each completed visit, an invoice for the service delivered; cancellations are free up to 24h before and $25 inside 24h. No service adds a service charge or a suggested-tip screen, and a tip — if you choose to leave one — is separate, in cash, and never routes through JAS.

A percentage misbehaves worst exactly here

The searches that land here usually contain the word “percentage,” and we are not going to print one — that refusal, with its reasons, is written in the general piece. What is worth adding: the percentage rule behaves worst on exactly these two services, because they carry the biggest published bills on the site. A deep clean runs $375 to $595 by bedrooms and baths; a move-out clean runs $450 to $750 on the published table. A fixed percent quietly instructs you to tip more for a move-out than for a standard visit — not because the crew did anything different for you, but because the base is bigger. And the base is bigger because the hours are bigger, and those hours are exactly what the invoice already pays for.

If you want a yardstick, use the shape of the day, which is published. A deep clean is a 4–6 hour visit by a 2-person team over 42 items verified by photo. A move-out is typically a 5–7 hour visit by a 2–3 person team over 38 items plus a full photo archive PDF — and on the table, the 3 bed · 2 bath row runs as long as 7–10 hours. Decide what that day was worth to you, in cash, and you have your number. No percentage required.

“A percentage ties the tip to the invoice. A one-time visit deserves the opposite: tie it to the day you watched two or three people work.”

The deep clean: the longest day in an occupied home

A deep clean happens in a home you still live in, and that makes it the easy case. You are usually there at the end of the visit, or back that same evening, so the natural moment is the close: the team finishes the list, you walk the result, and if you tip you hand it over in person — two people, 4–6 hours, so make sure it lands on both. The one real difference from a recurring visit is the calendar: there is no year-end gesture to fall back on here. That day is the only day there is.

The move-out: the visit you might never see

A move-out differs in three concrete ways, all published on the service page. First, the property should be empty — empty is best — and the visit is scheduled for after the last box is out and before your final walkthrough. Second, the team is 2–3 people, not always two: a single bill can be a three-way split, so if you tip, say who it is for. Third, the timeline is tight and building-specific: in Brickell and Miami Beach high-rises most condo associations require a reserved freight elevator and a firm move-out window, and end-of-month dates fill first because most leases turn over then.

That rewrites the hand-over. If you will be at the final walkthrough, in person is simplest: the clean finishes before that appointment. If you have already returned the keys and will not overlap the team at all, the empty unit is the drop-off point: cash, in plain sight, with a short note saying it is for the cleaning team. In an empty property the note matters more than in an occupied one — there is nothing else in the unit that money could belong to, and an unexplained envelope is precisely what a professional team will not touch. And never the front desk: the building logs a vendor, not the people who worked your unit.

The deposit is not a tipping question

One honest boundary, because on a move-out the money you are actually worried about is not the tip — it is the deposit. A tip does nothing for it, and should not try. What does travel to that decision is the record: eligible completed visits include a CleanCheck photo report you can forward at handoff, on top of the 38-item checklist and the full photo archive PDF. The deposit decision itself always rests with your landlord. Tip because the day was worked well; use the photos for the handoff — and if you are really weighing the visit’s full cost, that is in how much does move-out cleaning cost in Miami.

Quick answers

Do you tip for a one-time cleaning?

It is optional, and nothing in the JAS flow expects it: no tip control at booking, no gratuity line on the invoice — the Terms say nothing is charged at booking and that after each completed visit we issue an invoice for the service delivered. On a one-off there is no year-end gesture to fall back on: if you want to tip, the day of the visit is the day.

Is there a standard percentage for a move-out or deep-clean tip?

Not one we can honestly print — and a percentage behaves worst here, on the biggest published bills: $375 to $595 for a deep clean, $450 to $750 on the move-out table. A fixed percent scales the tip with the invoice, not with anything the crew did. Size it against the published day instead: 4–6 hours by a 2-person team for a deep clean, typically 5–7 hours by a 2–3 person team for a move-out.

How do I tip if I have already returned the keys?

If you will be at the final walkthrough, in person is simplest — the clean is scheduled to finish before it. If you will not overlap the team at all, leave cash inside the unit, in plain sight, with a short note saying it is for the cleaning team; in an empty property an unmarked envelope is the one thing nobody will touch. Do not leave it with the front desk: the building logs a vendor, not the people who worked your unit.

Will a tip help me get my security deposit back?

No — and it should not try. The deposit decision itself always rests with your landlord. What actually travels to that decision is the record: eligible completed move-out visits include a CleanCheck photo report you can forward at handoff, on top of the 38-item checklist and full photo archive PDF. Tip because the day was worked well; use the photos for the handoff.

The short version

Optional in both cases, never billed, and no honest percentage to copy. What changes with a deep clean or a move-out is not the rule but the hand-over: a team of 2–3 people, a day of 4 to 10 hours depending on the published row, and sometimes an empty property you are no longer in. If you tip: cash, with a note, meant for the whole team, sized against the day and not the invoice. If you do not, nothing happens — the published price is the whole price.

This guide is part of the JAS operating playbook — the one-time-visit chapter of an answer the rest of the industry prefers to leave to national averages.
