What Las Colinas brings
Carved out of Ben H. Carpenter's family ranch beginning in 1972 across more than 12,000 acres as one of the first planned communities in the United States, Las Colinas pairs roughly 3,400 single-family houses with a wall of apartment and condo towers around Lake Carolyn and its gondola canals. Waterfront and high-rise units collect hard-water spotting on glass walls and fixtures, while office-park hardscape and open North Texas wind push dust onto the large window expanses these floor plans are built around.
Corporate density defines the district: roughly 25 million square feet of office space, nearly the equal of the Dallas central business district, and more than 2,000 companies, including the headquarters of Caterpillar (moved to Irving in 2022), Fluor, Celanese, Kimberly-Clark and Commercial Metals, with Robert Glen's nine bronze mustangs at Williams Square, installed in 1984 at one and a half times life size, serving as its landmark.
