What Kingwood brings
Opened in 1971 as a 14,000-acre master-planned community by King Ranch and Friendswood Development Company on timberland the Foster Lumber Company had held since the 1890s, Kingwood earned its "Livable Forest" billing from a canopy that still shades more than 75 miles of hike-and-bike trails. All that tree cover means relentless pollen and leaf litter and mildew on shaded walls, while the West Fork of the San Jacinto River — Lake Houston's main inflow, dammed far upstream at Lake Conroe, whose floodgates the river authority opened during Hurricane Harvey in 2017 — flooded the community severely and left a long tail of gutted-and-rebuilt interiors.
