What The Heights brings
Oscar Martin Carter's Omaha and South Texas Land Company platted 1,756 acres here in 1891 as one of Texas's first planned streetcar suburbs, leaving Victorian cottages, craftsman bungalows and turn-of-the-century homes built mostly between 1891 and 1930 across four city-recognized historic districts. Sitting near 59 feet of elevation, roughly 23 feet above downtown, the neighborhood stayed dry when the bayous rose, but original millwork, transoms and pier-and-beam floors still soak up summer humidity that runs above 90 percent at dawn, while the tree-canopied esplanades drop pollen and leaf litter on porches year-round.
The retail base runs along Yale Street and the North Shepherd edge — Heights Mercantile at 714 Yale Street, where Heights Boulevard meets 7th, with tenants including Aesop, Vuori and Melange Creperie, and M-K-T at 600 N. Shepherd Drive, five warehouses adapted into shops, restaurants and offices on the 4.7-mile Heights Hike and Bike Trail — alongside the upscale boutiques and restaurants that filled in after a section of the neighborhood ended its dry status in 2017.
