What Midtown brings
A Victorian residential quarter that emptied out by mid-century, Midtown was rebuilt after the city established the Midtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone in 1995, with roughly 2,200 multi-family units going up between 1990 and 2000 across its 1.24 square miles and 325 blocks of townhomes, mid-rise apartments and older houses. The 2020 count of 10,820 residents stood 45.4 percent above 2010's 7,441, a churn that drives constant move-in and move-out turnover, and units this close to the Pierce Elevated take on freeway grit on top of the humidity load that comes with 49.77 inches of rain a year.
Restaurants and bars anchor the base — Josephine's, The Breakfast Klub, Axelrad and Mai's among them — alongside Houston Community College's Central Campus, The Ensemble Theatre, the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, MATCH (Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston) on Main Street and Midtown Park, with Little Saigon's bilingual signage on Milam and Travis marking the district officially designated in 2004.
