What Memorial brings
Memorial runs west from the Memorial Villages to the Energy Corridor between Buffalo Bayou on the south and Westview on the north, built out subdivision by subdivision — Memorial Bend from 1955 with its mid-century modern houses, then Nottingham Forest, Westchester and Fonn Villas in the 1960s — under dense tree cover along the bayou. Terry Hershey Park keeps that bayou unchannelized and the damp and leaf litter close, and the Addicks and Barker releases during Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 put four and a half to five feet of water into spots near the park, so rehabbed slabs, replaced floors and humidity control are the standing conditions.
The commercial base here is heavy: the Memorial City Management District covers 850 acres straddling Interstate 10 with Memorial City Mall, the 527-bed Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center and CityCentre — over 8.3 million square feet of office and 6.1 million square feet of retail employing more than 47,000 people — and the Energy Corridor's office cluster continues west along Interstate 10 and Eldridge Parkway.
