What Bellaire brings
Houston annexed the land ringing Bellaire on December 31, 1948, landlocking the townsite William Wright Baldwin had laid out in 1908 on William Marsh Rice's ranch, and the population jumped from 10,173 in 1950 to 19,872 in 1960 — post-war stock that a late-1980s loosening of the city's strict zoning has been steadily replacing with larger houses. That leaves 17,202 residents (2020) on 3.6 square miles where teardown lots and construction dust turn up mid-block, while drainage into the Brays Bayou watershed and Hurricane Harvey in August 2017 left a long tail of rebuilt ground floors and replaced flooring.
Nicknamed the City of Homes for its mostly residential character, Bellaire still carries a real office spine of high-rise buildings along its Interstate 610 West Loop frontage, plus land zoned for light industrial, commercial and mixed-use residential and commercial uses inside the city limits.
