What River Oaks brings
Established in the 1920s by William and Michael Hogg with attorney Hugh Potter, who took the first land option in 1923, River Oaks spreads about 1,100 acres and roughly 1,600 homes across two square miles bounded by Buffalo Bayou, South Shepherd, Willowick and Westheimer, with the original deed restrictions fixing American Colonial and English Tudor forms only along Kirby Drive. Twenties-and-thirties originals now stand beside full rebuilds, so deep millwork, stone floors and stair halls hold Gulf humidity and bayou-lot damp while gumbo clay and live-oak pollen come in off large lots.
Inside its boundaries the district is almost entirely residential apart from the private River Oaks Country Club, whose original Donald Ross golf course Tom Fazio redesigned in 2015, with the retail sitting on the edges — the River Oaks Shopping Center at West Gray and South Shepherd, whose first stores opened in November 1937 and which ranks as the third oldest shopping center of its type in the United States, plus the Westheimer frontage along the southern boundary.
