What Little Haiti brings
Built on historic Lemon City, settled by Bahamian immigrants before Miami incorporated, the stock is early-1900s wood-frame and 1920s-40s masonry houses and duplexes running from NE 54th Street north to 80th, at about 7 feet above sea level. A post office called Motto opened by 1889 and gave way to the name Lemon City by 1893, three years before the Florida East Coast Railway reached Miami; the Little Haiti name came with later Haitian arrivals, and city commissioners made it an official neighborhood in May 2016, reaching west to I-95.
NE 2nd Avenue is the main strip: Haitian restaurants, markets and botanicas, the gingerbread-style Caribbean Marketplace and the Little Haiti Cultural Center, plus galleries and warehouse space spilling north from Wynwood. Charles Harrison Pawley designed the Marketplace, a 13-foot bronze statue of Toussaint Louverture stands at North Miami Avenue and 62nd Street, and the Lemon City Branch Library and Lemon City Park keep the old name alive.
