What Monte Vista brings
One hundred city blocks sit about 2 miles north of downtown here, on the goat pasture real-estate developers took an interest in when Monte Vista began development in 1889: Queen Anne, Hollywood Bungalow, Georgian, Tudor, Moorish and Victorian-era houses, built street by street with different developers owning blocks at a time and largely finished by the 1930s, many stucco over clay tile, with rear alley garages and former servants' quarters. The neighborhood was designated a local historic district in 1975 and listed on the National Register in 1998. Large live oaks, palms and oleanders line those streets, so catkins and yellow oak pollen coat porches every March and April while original 1920s bath tile and glazing carry the scale of very hard limestone water.
This is a residential district by designation, with the working commerce on its edges — San Antonio College, founded in 1925 at 1819 N. Main Avenue, sits at the southern boundary along Ashby Place, the San Pedro Avenue and North St. Mary's Street corridors carry the shops and offices that frame the neighborhood, and converted houses along the Ashby and Main Avenue edge now hold professional offices.
