Carved out of the breeding and hobby farm James J. Hill began assembling in 1883 and grew to 5,000 acres, opened to houses by his grandchildren after Louis W. Hill's death in 1948, North Oaks covers 8.62 square miles with nearly a fifth of that water, Pleasant Lake included, and because every deed runs to the street centerline the roads are private — so decades of large houses on wooded lots take in oak pollen, heavy leaf fall and five months of road salt, sand and snowmelt carried up long drives onto interior wood.
